Calling all ages and all skill levels! Nature journaling is creative, rigorous, and playful, easy to begin and learn, and your practice will grow and mature over a lifetime. You do not need to be an artist or a naturalist to begin. These skills can be learned by anyone, and you can develop them with deliberate practice.

Inspired by RIE® classes, our youngest learners explore simple materials outside and parents/caregivers build their observation skills.

Parenting is a delight and a challenge. There is no "one perfect" method for discipline or sleep. Sally will work with you to help figure out your parenting philosophy, culture and values to find the right tools for you.

Open Spaces is happy to work with you and create a custom experience whether for an individual, a group or the community.

Leave no Trace...
Exploring the outdoors sustainably every time we play. Open Spaces commits to reciprocity with the Earth.
All Seasons Outdoor Play
Outdoors. All Fours Seasons. The weather is as it is and we cannot change it. We can dress appropriately to embrace all kinds of weather comfortably and safely. We can describe weather objectively (rain is wet, sunshine can get quite warm) rather than subjectively (yucky, or too hot) to build our mental health and acceptance of all weather.
Experiential Learning
Experiencing the world around you through all eight senses builds your brain and understanding. Reflecting upon those experiences, telling stories, writing, is a key component of learning.
Place Based Education
Returning to the same park each week , we really get to know our world. A blade of grass looks remarkably different each season. We get to know how the rain, wind and human involvement shape our land. Nature is our teacher.
Child Led
The best play based learning is child led. The child chooses when and how to participate; the leader observes and gets to know the child to better support the child’s learning. Open ended provocations offer an opportunity for the child.
